Sapthapadi

Seven handfuls of rice, coins and betel nuts are placed in a straight line. . As the groom leads the bride to each pileand as she places her right toe on one pile, he recites a vedic mantra signifying each step of togetherness:
  • 1st step - to provide for a happy and healthy home.

  • 2nd step - to develop physical, mental and spiritual powers.

  • 3rd step - to increase our wealth by diligence and righteousness.

  • 4th step - to acquire knowledge, happiness and harmony by mutual love and trust

  • 5th step – to be blessed with strong, virtuous and loving children.

  • 6th step - to care for each other for longevity.

  • 7th step - to be true companions and remain lifelong partners

The completion of these seven steps together, symbolizes the beginning of their journey through life as husband and wife. The groom then places the bride’s foot on a grinding stone and puts silver rings on her toes.
